MAGNESIUM DIE CASTING
Magnesium is an excellent die cast choice to distinguish portable and durable products from the competition, offering a perfect combination of light weight, rigidity and resistance to wear for diverse die cast part applications. From concept to completion, Pace Industries, a magnesium die casting company, works with customers to introduce the distinctive benefits of magnesium die casting. Whether it is prototypes, tooling or a long-term production relationship, we have the knowledge and expertise to deliver the advantages of magnesium die casting.
Magnesium is produced from sea water, brines and magnesium-bearing minerals which offer abundant material supplies. Magnesium is also 100% recyclable, making it an attractive option when considering the environment. Once a magnesium die cast tool or part reaches the end of its life, it can easily be recycled to serve another purpose, saving on costs and environmental impact.
Magnesium is the lightest of all structural metals and is used extensively in applications demanding high performance characteristics. In addition to being 75% lighter than steel and 33% lighter than aluminum, the weight of magnesium is nearly equal to many plastics and offers several distinct advantages over plastic, including superior stiffness and wear resistance. Magnesium parts can be cast to net shape and have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Magnesium castings can also be used in high temperature applications. Other advantages of magnesium include:
• Outstanding Dimensional Control
• Ultra-Thin Wall Design Options
• Excellent Vibration Dampening and Shock Absorption
• EMI/RFI Shielding
• Long Tooling Life to Lower Total Production Cost
• Abundant Finishing Options
• Withstands Higher Operating Temperatures
• Recyclable
• Good Environmental Corrosion Resistance
• Very Good Stiffness-to-Weight Ratio
• Highest Strength-to-Weight Ratio of Die Cast Alloys
Magnesium is serviced worldwide by Pace from our Product Tech Division. Product Tech is capable of producing parts with cast shot weights up to approximately 5 pounds and has extensive experience working with magnesium in industries producing power tools, ATV’s, computers, radios and medical devices. If you’re looking for a company with extensive magnesium die casting knowledge and expertise, look no further than Pace.
TYPES OF MAGNESIUM ALLOYS
AZ91D
AZ91D is the most commonly used magnesium die cast alloy that has an outstanding combination of mechanical properties, castability, and corrosion resistance.
AZ91HP
This alloy has been specifically developed for corrosive environments, and has lower levels of nickel, iron, copper and silicon than AZ91D.
